To be truly sustainable, a community must balance the 'livability' needs of a fast-growing population, with the infrastructure necessary to support a competitive economy, and with the responsibility to make the most efficient use of land, air and water resources. So Mayor Bronconnier, Council and City planners have made the development of sustainable communities – and the elimination of resource-squandering urban sprawl - a priority consideration as the city grows and evolves. This means encouraging the development of higher density suburban communities that offer a full range of housing, employment centres near by, and access to public transit, regional parks and recreation facilities. It also means giving new life to inner city neighbourhoods, re-developing them as vital urban communities that offer all the advantages of living within walking distance of a thriving downtown. Mayor Bronconnier and Council have introduced policies, programs – and new ways of thinking – that are shaping Calgary's communities today, and will ensure those communities are sustainable and viable in the future, even as the city continues to grow at a pace seldom before seen anywhere in Canada.
