A livable city has in place the parks, playgrounds, recreation and sport centres, arenas, libraries, tourist attractions, museums and galleries that enrich the life of its residents. But Calgary has grown so quickly, recreation, sports and cultural infrastructure have not kept up with demand. We need more regional parks, more soccer fields, ice rinks, swimming pools and pathways, particularly in the communities being built in new growth suburbs. So, at a special meeting on November 6, 2007, Council unanimously approved an investment of more than $300 million in recreation and sports facilities to serve these new suburban communities, along with capacity upgrades to existing facilities, one in each quadrant. |
