THE RIVERS

Home Mayor's Initiatives Community Development The Rivers

The Rivers district takes in the area east of City Hall to the junction of the Bow and Elbow rivers, south to Stampede Park, plus all of downtown Calgary.

The Rivers includes the site of the first settlement in this area, Calgary’s first residential neighbourhoods, some of our favorite public family attractions, some of the most desirable (but un-reclaimed) riverfront property in all of Calgary, as well as East Village, the most blighted, long-neglected area in the entire city.

It took innovative thinking to kick-start re-development of the district, and a new (to Canada) way of financing the necessary municipal investment in infrastructure upgrades.

But now, after 30 years of inaction, the re-development of The Rivers has begun. Within a decade, it will no doubt be one of the most unique and desirable communities in Calgary, a vital, ‘alive’ urban neighbourhood within an easy walk of downtown.
