Mayor Bronconnier has taken the lead in negotiating other innovative new funding agreements, including:

  • The ENMAX Legacy Parks Fund, the largest such program of its kind in Canada, in which dividends from the City-owned utility are used for parkland both within and beyond Calgary’s borders. Since it was introduced in 2003, some $135 million has been made available.

Provincial funding support for affordable housing: $63 million in 2007, and a strong commitment for another $60 million over the next two years.

  • Federal GST refund: About $10 million per year for upgrades to amenities like the Zoo, Science Centre and Heritage Park.
  • Federal gas tax revenue-sharing: Almost $60 million since 2005
  • Provincial gas tax revenue-sharing: Almost $700 million has been returned to Calgary since this five-cents-per-litre rebate was confirmed in 2000.
  • Federal transit funding: Close to $70 million for transit infrastructure since 2006.
  • Alberta Municipal Infrastructure Program (AMIP): Calgary’s share $887 million over five years, 2005 to 2010.
