TRANSIT

Home Mayor's Initiatives Transportation Transit

Expanding the capacity of Calgary's public transit system to keep up with the city's dramatic growth is a priority of Mayor Bronconnier, City Council, and Calgarians themselves.

The CTrain system, which already carries more than 43 million passengers per year, a number that's doubled in the past decade, is the most successful light rail system -- and the only emissions-free, wind-powered public transit system, in all of North America.

In November, 2007, Mayor Bronconnier and Council approved investing $930 million of the new MSI funding in a major expansion of the system. And this is over and above the $526 million invested over the last eight years.

Extensions will be added to the northwest and northeast lines, three new stations will be built (for a system total of 29); 34 more cars will be purchased, and design work will begin for a future subway under 8th Avenue downtown.

And the long-awaited west leg will go ahead.
